In textiles, thread thickness is often described using systems like the Tex system, which measures the mass in grams per kilometer of thread. A lower Tex number indicates a finer thread, while a higher number signifies a thicker thread. Other systems, such as Denier, are also used, particularly for synthetic fibers.

The choice of thread thickness is paramount in sewing and garment manufacturing. Fine threads are ideal for delicate fabrics and intricate stitching where a subtle appearance is desired, such as in embroidery or fine apparel. Conversely, thicker threads provide greater strength and durability, making them suitable for heavy-duty applications like upholstery, denim, or sailmaking.
