Trunkporters

Trunkporters are specialists who move and transport large trunks, chests, and other heavy baggage. They work in hotels, airports, museums, theaters, and logistics hubs, using equipment such as hand trucks, stair-climbing dollies, straps, padding, and ramps to ensure safe handling and protect contents.

The term arose with the growth of long-distance travel and organized luggage handling in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; the practice predates the word itself in courier and freight services.

Typical tasks include loading and unloading trunks from vehicles or storage areas, securing lids, padding fragile contents, and planning routes through crowded spaces. They coordinate with drivers, curators, hotel staff, and event organizers.

Most trunkporters work for moving companies or facility management services. Training covers manual handling, equipment operation, and safety procedures; in some regions, qualifications in occupational safety or material handling may be required.
