Triagekäytännöt, known in English as triage practices, refer to the systematic process of prioritizing patients based on the severity of their condition and the urgency of their need for medical attention. This methodology is crucial in emergency medicine and disaster situations where resources are limited and the number of patients often exceeds the available staff and equipment. The primary goal of triage is to ensure that those with the most life-threatening injuries or illnesses receive immediate care, thereby maximizing the chances of survival and minimizing mortality.

The process typically involves a quick assessment of each patient's vital signs, symptoms, and overall condition. A standardized system is often employed, categorizing patients into different levels of urgency. Common categories include immediate (red), delayed (yellow), minimal (green), and expectant (black). Immediate patients require life-saving intervention, delayed patients can wait for a short period, minimal patients have minor injuries and can wait longer, and expectant patients have severe injuries and a low chance of survival even with treatment, or they are deceased.

Triagekäytännöt are not only used in hospital emergency departments but also by pre-hospital emergency medical services, military medical units, and during mass casualty incidents. The effectiveness of these practices relies on the training and experience of the medical personnel conducting the triage, as well as clear protocols and consistent application of the chosen system.
