Trennlage

Trennlage, literally meaning “separation layer” in German, designates a material layer placed between two adjacent layers or substances to prevent direct contact, control interactions, or facilitate processing and handling. It serves to isolate materials, enable easier de-molding or separation, and sometimes to aid alignment or moisture management. The concept is used across several industries and disciplines.

In packaging, labeling, and adhesive technologies a Trennlage acts as a release layer or backing between an adhesive and a protective liner. Common materials for this purpose include silicone-coated paper, PET film, or polyolefin films, chosen for low surface energy and compatibility with the adhesive system. In laminates and composites, a separation layer is introduced during curing or lamination to prevent sticking of plies, allowing for clean de-molding and easier handling of finished parts.

In textiles, printing, and related processes, a Trennlage may provide a temporary barrier to prevent transfer or sticking of materials, aid dimensional stability, or assist in feed and alignment during processing. In civil engineering and geotechnics, a separation layer (often a geotextile or geosynthetic membrane) is used between sublayers such as soil and aggregate to limit intermixing, improve drainage, and control shear or frost movement.
