Transformatorstages, commonly known as transformer stages or transformer-based models, refer to a sequence of interconnected transformer blocks used in deep learning architectures, particularly in natural language processing (NLP). Transformers were introduced in 2017 by Vaswani et al. in the paper "Attention Is All You Need," revolutionizing how models process sequential data by relying primarily on self-attention mechanisms rather than traditional recurrent or convolutional structures.

A transformer stage typically consists of two primary sub-layers: a multi-head attention layer and a position-wise feed-forward neural network. The multi-head attention mechanism allows the model to weigh the importance of different input tokens relative to each other, capturing dependencies across long sequences. This is followed by a feed-forward network that applies a fully connected layer to each position separately and identically. Both sub-layers are augmented with layer normalization and residual connections to stabilize training and improve gradient flow.

In practice, multiple transformer stages are stacked sequentially to form a transformer model, enabling hierarchical feature extraction. Each stage processes the output of the previous one, progressively refining representations. This architecture excels in tasks requiring contextual understanding, such as machine translation, text summarization, and question answering, due to its ability to model global relationships in data efficiently.

Transformer stages are also adaptable to other domains, including computer vision and time-series forecasting, through modifications like convolutional or vision-specific attention mechanisms. Their scalability and parallelizability make them a cornerstone of modern AI systems, though they often require substantial computational resources for training.
