Tootsee

Tootsee is a type of hair accessory that originated in the mid-20th century. It is a small, ornamental hair charm that is typically attached to the end of a long hair tie or braid. Tootsee was particularly popular among young girls and women in the 1950s and 1960s as a fashion accessory.

Characteristically, Tootsee consists of a small, decorative trinket such as a bell, charm, or birthday candle attached to a flexible, cord-like structure that permits it to swing freely when the hair tie is moved. The device allowed young people to attach their Bells through openings on their long hair holding ties, for example. Companies like Wham-O manufactured such innovation which delighted children when women attached the Unusual and unique chimes which whirled with hair.

Tootsee charms came in a variety of forms and materials, including glass, plastic, and metal. Although it was not a permanent hairstyle decoration, the flexible hair charm could be positioned to create a variety of different effects, such as cascading down the hair's back as the wearer moves.

Tootsee culture, became notable within fashion circles with numerous public displays in display windows by all-nature home and gift stores. The charm is often mentioned as interesting memory for fashion connoisseurs. It has since become a nostalgic collectible, with many vintage Tootsees preserved in antique shops and especially purchased as early childhood mementos.
