Toneleggene

Toneleggene, or tone genes, is a term used to describe the genetic factors that influence human auditory perception of musical tones and related abilities such as pitch discrimination, tonal memory, and musical production. Rather than a single gene, toneleggene are thought to arise from many genetic variants that collectively contribute to neural development, auditory processing, and memory, interacting with environmental factors such as musical training.

Research indicates that musical abilities have a heritable component. Twin and family studies suggest that a portion of variation in pitch perception and general musical aptitude is genetic, though estimates vary by trait and method. Modern studies use genome-wide association approaches to search for loci associated with musical traits; some candidate regions have been reported, but findings are not yet consistently replicated or confirmed, and effect sizes are typically small. The genes implicated are often related to neural development, synaptic transmission, and auditory cortical function, consistent with the brain networks involved in hearing and music.

Interpretation of toneleggene is challenging because musical ability is a complex, polygenic trait highly influenced by training, environment, and culture. The field aims to map biological pathways that contribute to auditory perception and to understand how genes and experience shape musical ability across the lifespan.
