Tolerances define the acceptable range between the maximum and minimum allowable sizes, shapes, or positions of a feature, accounting for variations due to material properties, machining processes, or environmental factors.

In precision engineering, tolerances are critical for ensuring interchangeability, where parts from different manufacturers or batches can be used together without issues. They help prevent defects caused by overly tight specifications, which could make production impractical or excessively costly.
