Toistinlaitteet, known in English as repeaters, are electronic devices used in telecommunications and computer networking to regenerate and retransmit a signal. They are essential components for extending the range of signal transmission over long distances. When a signal travels through a medium like a cable or the air, it gradually loses strength, a phenomenon called attenuation. A repeater receives this weakened signal, amplifies it, and then retransmits it, effectively boosting its power and allowing it to travel further without significant degradation.

In networking, repeaters operate at the physical layer (Layer 1) of the OSI model. They do not interpret or modify the data being transmitted; their sole function is to regenerate the signal's amplitude and timing. This makes them a simple yet crucial tool for connecting network segments that would otherwise be too far apart. For example, in early Ethernet networks, repeaters were used to connect multiple coaxial cable segments to create a larger network. Modern networking often utilizes more advanced devices like switches and routers, which perform similar signal regeneration but also offer more sophisticated traffic management and data routing capabilities. However, the fundamental principle of extending signal reach through regeneration remains the core function of a repeater.
