Tiritiri

Tiritiri Matangi is a small island located in the Hauraki Gulf, approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Auckland, New Zealand. It is part of the Tiritiri Matangi Island Reserve, a protected area managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in collaboration with the Tiritiri Matangi Island Trust. The island covers an area of around 1,000 hectares and is renowned for its ecological significance and natural beauty.

Originally inhabited by the Māori, Tiritiri Matangi holds cultural importance as a site of historical significance. The island was later used as a military training ground during World War II, which led to the introduction of feral animals such as pigs, goats, and rats. These invasive species caused significant ecological damage, disrupting native bird populations and vegetation. In the 1980s, a large-scale predator eradication program was initiated to restore the island’s native ecosystems.

Today, Tiritiri Matangi is a haven for native New Zealand wildlife, particularly birds. The island is home to over 200 species of birds, including many that are endangered or at risk, such as the kākā, tīeke (saddleback), and North Island brown kiwi. The absence of predators allows these species to thrive, making the island a key site for conservation efforts. Visitors can explore the island via guided walks, which provide opportunities to observe native flora and fauna in their natural habitat.

Accessible by ferry from downtown Auckland, Tiritiri Matangi attracts nature enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and ecotourists. The island’s conservation work continues to be a priority, with ongoing monitoring and management to maintain its ecological integrity.
