A Time of Flight camera, often abbreviated as ToF camera, is a type of depth-sensing device. It works by measuring the time it takes for light emitted by the camera to travel to an object and reflect back. This principle, known as time of flight, allows the camera to determine the distance to each point in its field of view.

The camera typically consists of an infrared emitter, such as a laser or LED, which projects light onto the scene. A specialized sensor then captures the reflected light. By precisely measuring the duration of this round trip, the camera calculates the depth information. This process is repeated for every pixel in the captured image, resulting in a depth map.

ToF cameras offer several advantages. They can capture depth information rapidly, making them suitable for real-time applications. They are also generally less sensitive to ambient light conditions compared to some other depth-sensing technologies. The output is a 3D point cloud or a depth image, which represents the scene in three dimensions.

These cameras find applications in various fields. In consumer electronics, they are used in smartphones for features like augmented reality, facial recognition, and portrait mode photography. In robotics, ToF cameras aid in navigation, obstacle avoidance, and object manipulation. Industrial automation also utilizes them for quality control and precise positioning. Automotive applications are emerging, particularly for advanced driver-assistance systems.
