Tiivistämättömyys

Tiivistämättömyys is a Finnish term that translates to "non-compressibility" or "incompressibility." It refers to the property of a substance or material that resists significant changes in volume when subjected to pressure. In practical terms, a perfectly non-compressible substance would maintain its volume regardless of the external forces applied.

In physics and engineering, the concept of non-compressibility is often an idealization used in mathematical models. While no real-world substance is truly non-compressible, some materials exhibit very low compressibility, making the assumption of non-compressibility a useful approximation in certain scenarios. Liquids, for instance, are generally considered much less compressible than gases. This property is fundamental to the operation of hydraulic systems, where the near-incompressibility of hydraulic fluid allows for efficient transmission of force.

The degree of compressibility is quantified by the bulk modulus, which is the ratio of pressure change to the relative volume change. A substance with a high bulk modulus is considered to have low compressibility, or to be nearly non-compressible. For gases, compressibility is significant, and their volume changes considerably with pressure variations, as described by gas laws like Boyle's Law.
