Tiedonhaussa

Tiedonhaussa refers to the set of activities involved in finding information to address a question or problem. The term is commonly used in Finnish educational and library contexts to describe both individual information-seeking behavior and more formal information retrieval processes.

The process typically includes recognizing the information need, defining the scope, formulating search questions, choosing sources and search strategies, and using search tools such as library catalogs, databases, and search engines. Query formulation, metadata, and search syntax (keywords, boolean operators) are often taught as practical skills. After locating potential sources, the user evaluates credibility, relevance, bias, and accuracy, then collects, organizes, and synthesizes information, and finally cites sources and reflects on the results.

In practice, tiedonhaussa is supported by libraries, educators, and information professionals. Instruction in information literacy aims to improve users’ ability to conduct effective searches, assess information quality, and use information ethically. Digital environments have expanded the range of available sources but also increase the need for critical evaluation and privacy awareness.
