Tidsfrekvensmetoderna, or time-frequency methods, are a class of signal processing techniques used to analyze how the frequency content of a signal changes over time. Traditional methods like the Fourier Transform provide a global view of a signal's frequencies but lose temporal information, meaning they don't tell us when specific frequencies occurred. Conversely, analyzing a signal in the time domain reveals when events happen but not their frequency composition. Tidsfrekvensmetoderna bridge this gap by offering a representation of the signal that shows both time and frequency information simultaneously.

A common tidsfrekvensmetod is the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT). In an STFT, the signal is divided into short, overlapping segments. A Fourier Transform is then applied to each segment, yielding the frequency content within that particular time window. While effective, the STFT has a fixed time-frequency resolution trade-off determined by the window length. Shorter windows provide better temporal resolution but poorer frequency resolution, and vice versa.

More advanced tidsfrekvensmetoderna include wavelets. Wavelet transforms use basis functions called wavelets, which are localized in both time and frequency. Unlike the STFT's fixed window, wavelets offer a variable resolution, providing good frequency resolution for low frequencies and good temporal resolution for high frequencies. This makes wavelets particularly well-suited for analyzing signals with transient features or non-stationary characteristics, such as speech, music, or biological signals.
