Thodupuzha

Thodupuzha is a municipality and the largest town in Idukki district of Kerala, India. It is the administrative headquarters of the Thodupuzha taluk. The town is situated about 65 km (40 mi) east of Kochi. The name "Thodupuzha" is derived from the Malayalam words "thodu" meaning a small stream and "puzha" meaning river, referring to the Thodupuzha River that flows through the town.

The region is characterized by its agricultural landscape, with significant cultivation of rubber, spices, and fruits. Thodupuzha serves as a commercial hub for the surrounding rural areas, with markets and business establishments catering to the local population and agricultural produce. The town has a moderate climate, influenced by its proximity to the Western Ghats.

Thodupuzha is well-connected by road, with National Highway 85 passing through it. It is a nodal point for travel to various parts of Idukki district, including hill stations like Munnar. The nearest railway station is at Aluva, and the nearest airport is Cochin International Airport.

Historically, the area was part of the ancient Chera kingdom. Later, it came under the control of various local rulers before being integrated into the Travancore Kingdom and subsequently, the state of Kerala after India's independence. The town's development has been closely tied to the agricultural economy and its role as an administrative center. Educational institutions, hospitals, and recreational facilities are present within the municipality.
