Thalen

Thalen is a fictional coastal city-state in the fantasy setting of Elarion. It lies along the Naldis Bay and serves as a major maritime and commercial center, as well as a cultural hub for the eastern provinces.

The city occupies a crescent bay sheltered by limestone cliffs. Two rivers meet near the harbor, powering mills and supplying fresh water. The Lantern Promenade and the Lighthouse of Gull’s Watch are prominent landmarks.

Thalen was founded by seafarers in the early era and grew as a trading post linking inland kingdoms with seaborne routes. It gained a constitutional charter under the Thalen Council and expanded its influence through guild-sponsored commerce. It endured pirate raids during the late medieval conflicts and secured broader autonomy after the War of Currents.

Today, Thalen is governed by a Council of Twelve, elected by merchant guilds, with a Magistrate overseeing administration. The economy centers on port trade, shipbuilding, glassware, and fishing, with markets for spices, textiles, and timber.

The population is around 110,000 and includes humans, elves, dwarves, and sea-kin. Thalenese is the common language, supplemented by Common and Low Elvish. The city hosts an annual Lantern Festival and a seafood-focused cuisine.

Key institutions include Thalen University and the Guildhall. The Harbor of Echoes and the coastal fortress protect the port and attract scholars and traders.

Admiral Kael Morn and poet Sira Thalen are among historical figures associated with the city.
