Testmatriser

Testmatriser is a concept used in quality assurance and software testing to organize test cases within a grid-like structure that links inputs, environments, and features. The core idea is to model combinations of test factors as a matrix, where rows may represent input conditions (for example, data types, value ranges) and columns represent environmental factors (for example, operating system, browser, hardware). Cells in the matrix denote individual test cases that exercise a particular combination. This approach helps teams ensure broad coverage and makes it easy to spot missing scenarios.

In practice, a testmatriser begins with selecting relevant factors and discretizing them into levels; a cross-product of these levels defines the set of test cases. Teams fill the matrix with test identifiers, expected results, and execution status. During execution, testers move through rows and columns, often prioritizing high-risk or high-reward cells. Aggregated views of the matrix support reporting on coverage, risk, and progress.

Applications of testmatriser include software testing, hardware validation, and data validation workflows where matrix-style coverage is beneficial. It can complement pairwise or combinatorial testing by providing a visual map of test coverage, and in some contexts the term is used loosely to describe any matrix-based test planning approach rather than a formal method.
