Termspayment refers to the set of conditions under which payment is due in a commercial transaction. In formal agreements it defines when an invoice is paid, what payment methods are accepted, and what discounts or penalties apply for early or late settlement. The term is commonly included in contracts, purchase orders, and supplier terms, and it can vary by customer, product, or region.

Common terms include Net 30, Net 60, and Net 90, indicating payment due dates 30, 60, or 90 days after the invoice date. Cash on delivery (COD) and end-of-month terms (EOM) are also used. Discount terms such as 2/10 net 30 offer a reduction if payment is made within a specified short period. Terms may specify accepted payment methods (bank transfer, credit card, check) and whether late fees or interest accrue for overdue amounts.

Impact and management: Payment terms influence cash flow, working capital, and supplier relationships. Shorter terms can improve a supplier’s liquidity but may raise costs for buyers, while longer terms ease buyer cash flow but increase supplier risk. Companies often use credit checks, credit limits, and supply-chain financing programs to manage risk, and may offer early-payment discounts to incentivize prompt settlement. Cross-border transactions introduce considerations such as currency, exchange risk, and regulatory compliance.

Legal and operational aspects: Terms should be clearly documented in contracts to define breach consequences, late-payment penalties, and remedies. In international settings, terms may need alignment with governing law, dispute resolution, and anti-fraud measures. Digital tools such as electronic invoicing and dynamic discounting are increasingly used to streamline termspayment processes.
