Termsarvestus

Termsarvestus is the process of systematically collecting, identifying and organizing domain-specific terms from texts to create terminology resources such as term bases, glossaries or ontologies. The term combines the Estonian words for term (termin) and harvest (harvestus) and is used in fields such as lexicography, terminology management and language technology. The goal is to produce stable, unambiguous term forms, definitions and linguistic relationships that support translation, documentation and knowledge management.

The practice typically involves several steps. Data is gathered from diverse sources relevant to a domain, such as standards, manuals, product documentation and technical articles. Texts are preprocessed to handle language-specific features, including tokenization, normalization and morphological analysis, which is especially important for morphologically rich languages like Estonian. Term candidates are generated using statistical methods (for example, tf-idf or mutual information) and linguistic patterns to detect compounds and domain-specific expressions. Candidate terms are validated through expert review, sense disambiguation and consistency checks. Finally, terms are normalized and standardized, with variants mapped to canonical forms and often linked to concept identifiers to enable integration with other resources.

Output can be formatted for use in termbases, translation memories, software localization pipelines and knowledge graphs. Common formats include TBX and RDF/OWL exports, facilitating interoperability with CAT tools, terminology management systems and multilingual information retrieval.

Applications of termsarvestus include improving accuracy and consistency in technical documentation, multilingual product localization, advanced search and discovery, and the construction of domain ontologies and knowledge graphs.
