In a seaport context, these include container terminals, bulk terminals, roll-on/roll-off and automotive terminals. Terminal operators or concession-holding port authorities manage these operations to maximize throughput, ensure safety, and meet service level agreements with customers such as shipping lines, forwarders, and shippers. Core components are handling equipment, yard management, gate operations, and coordination with rail or road links.

Key processes include vessel operations (discharge and load using quay or gantry cranes), yard operations (stowage planning, container storage, order filling), and gate-in/gate-out procedures for import and export movements. Stowage planning optimizes container placement by size, destination, weight, and intermodal routing to minimize shuffles and dwell time. A Terminal Operating System coordinates planning, inventory control, equipment scheduling, and documentation across parties, often supported by automated or semi-automated equipment such as automated stacking cranes or automated guided vehicles.

Performance is measured by metrics such as crane moves per hour, container moves per hour, berth productivity, yard productivity, dwell time, and vessel turnaround time. Safety and regulatory compliance cover occupational safety, environmental management, and security regimes (such as ISPS and SOLAS), as well as customs and ballast water controls. Stakeholders include port authorities, terminal operators, shipping lines, freight forwarders, trucking and rail companies, and labor unions.

Recent trends in terminaloperaties include increased automation and digitization, with expanded use of yard automation, remote crane operation, and integrated data exchanges between TOS, ERP, and carrier systems. Green initiatives aim to reduce emissions through electrification, LNG or shore power, and optimized routing. The field continues to evolve with larger vessels, stricter reliability requirements, and a growing emphasis on resilience and real-time visibility.
