Telouet

Telouet is a village located in the High Atlas mountains of Morocco, in the Ouarzazate Province. It is historically significant as the seat of the Glaoui family, who held considerable power in southern Morocco in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Kasbah of Telouet, a grand fortified palace, stands as a prominent landmark and testament to their former influence.

The Kasbah, though now in a state of ruin, once comprised hundreds of rooms, adorned with intricate stucco work, zellij tile mosaics, and cedar wood carvings. Its construction spanned several decades, with the most elaborate sections built in the early 20th century. The Glaoui family used Telouet as their administrative and residential center, controlling vital caravan routes that passed through the region.

The village itself is situated at an altitude of over 1,800 meters, offering dramatic views of the surrounding mountainous landscape. It is a common stop for travelers journeying between Marrakech and the Sahara Desert, often via the Tizi n'Tichka pass. The economy of Telouet is largely based on agriculture, with residents cultivating crops in the fertile valleys. The Kasbah, despite its decay, continues to draw visitors interested in Moroccan history and architecture, providing a glimpse into a powerful past.
