Moroccan

Moroccan refers to anything of, or pertaining to, Morocco, a country in North Africa, and to its people, the Moroccans. The nation is a constitutional monarchy led by King Mohammed VI, who has reigned since 1999. The population is over 36 million, and the society is a diverse blend of Arab, Berber and other communities.

Geographically, Morocco stretches from the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts to the Atlas Mountains and the edge of the Sahara. Rabat is the capital; Casablanca is the largest city. The country has varied climates, from Mediterranean along the coasts to arid interior regions.

Linguistically, Moroccan society uses Arabic (Modern Standard Arabic and Moroccan Arabic, or Darija) and Amazigh (Berber) languages, which have official status alongside Arabic; French is widely used in business and higher education, and increasingly in public life. Islam is the dominant religion. Moroccan culture is known for its cuisine (tagine, couscous, mint tea), art, music, and distinctive architecture, including riads and mosaic work. Morocco has several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as Fez, Marrakech, and the ancient city of Ait Benhaddou.

Economy and politics: Morocco has a diversified economy with sectors such as agriculture, phosphates, manufacturing, and tourism. The dirham is the currency. The government pursues economic reforms and greater openness to trade, and Morocco is a leading economy in North Africa. It is a member of the African Union.
