Teljesítménytuning, often translated as performance tuning, refers to the modification of a vehicle's engine and related systems to increase its power output. This can involve a range of adjustments, from simple software tweaks to the installation of more complex hardware.

The most common methods of performance tuning include remapping the engine control unit (ECU), which alters fuel and ignition timing parameters to optimize combustion. Hardware modifications can include fitting a larger turbocharger or supercharger to force more air into the engine, upgrading the exhaust system to reduce backpressure, and installing a high-flow air intake. Internally, engine components such as pistons, connecting rods, and camshafts can be reinforced or replaced with performance-oriented parts.

The goals of performance tuning can vary. Some individuals seek a significant increase in horsepower and torque for track use or spirited driving. Others aim for improved throttle response, better fuel efficiency, or a more satisfying engine sound.

However, performance tuning can have drawbacks. It may void the manufacturer's warranty, increase fuel consumption, and potentially reduce the engine's lifespan if not done correctly. Emissions can also be affected, and in many regions, modifications that significantly alter a vehicle's performance may require re-homologation or may not be legal for road use. Professional expertise is often recommended to ensure modifications are safe, reliable, and compliant with local regulations.
