Teknival

Teknival is a term that generally refers to an illegal or semi-legal outdoor gathering, often lasting several days, centered around electronic music and often involving sound systems playing techno and hardcore music. These events are typically held in remote or abandoned locations such as fields, forests, or industrial sites, away from urban centers and public scrutiny. The term itself is a portmanteau of "tekno" and "festival."

Teknivals are characterized by their DIY ethos and often spontaneous organization. Participants, known as "tekneers" or "ravers," bring their own equipment, including sound systems, lighting, and camping gear. The atmosphere is often communal, with attendees sharing resources and contributing to the overall event. While music is the primary focus, there can also be other activities and stalls selling food, drinks, and merchandise.

The legality of teknivals varies widely. Many are held without permits, leading to potential clashes with authorities over noise pollution, public order, and environmental impact. Law enforcement intervention can result in the dispersal of attendees and the confiscation of equipment. Despite this, teknivals have a persistent presence in various countries, particularly in Europe, and attract a dedicated following. The music played is predominantly in the harder spectrum of electronic dance music, such as hardcore, gabber, and industrial techno.
