Tekhnika

Tekhnika is a term used in several languages of Eastern Europe and surrounding regions to denote machinery, equipment, and, more broadly, technology. In Russian and Ukrainian spellings (tekhnika/техника), the word covers both the physical devices that constitute machinery and the broader field of technology, engineering, and applied sciences. The word derives from the Greek tekhnē, meaning craft or skill, combined with a suffix that forms a category name for systematic knowledge and objects.

In everyday use tekhnika refers to hardware and devices used in homes, workplaces, and transport—such as appliances, vehicles, tools, and industrial machinery. In education and industry, the term can also denote the practical techniques and methods employed within a given field, distinguishing the tangible equipment from theoretical science (nauka/teoria).

Regional usage varies: in many languages the closest equivalent is technika/technika, and in Polish the term technika is common for both equipment and technology; in Bulgarian and other Cyrillic-using languages the form tekhnika is standard. Across the region, the word frequently appears in contexts relating to consumer electronics, construction, agriculture, and military materiel, reflecting the broad sense of technology as the ensemble of tools and methods used to accomplish tasks.

Note: The term is closely related but not always synonymous with "technology" in English, which more often emphasizes knowledge, processes, and systems beyond individual devices.
