Teilgewinde

Teilgewinde, which translates to partial thread or incomplete thread, refers to a screw or bolt that has threads along only a portion of its length. The remaining portion of the shaft is smooth, unthreaded. This design is intentionally manufactured and serves specific purposes in mechanical assemblies.

The primary advantage of a partial thread is to allow for clamping without the threads engaging with the mating part. When a bolt with a partial thread is tightened, the unthreaded shank passes through the hole in the component being fastened. This allows the unthreaded portion to support the load, ensuring that the threads only engage with the nut or tapped hole at the very end of the assembly. This prevents thread stripping or damage that could occur if the threads were to bottom out prematurely or if the clamping force was applied solely through the threads.

Partial threads are commonly found in bolts used for fastening metal sheets, castings, or in applications where a precise clamping force is required. The unthreaded shank also provides a lead-in for easier assembly and can act as a locating pin. The length of the threaded portion and the unthreaded shank are critical design parameters that are determined by the intended application and the materials being joined.
