Teenusetõkestamine, commonly known as Denial-of-Service (DoS) or Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, is a malicious attempt to disrupt the normal traffic of a targeted server, service, or network by overwhelming it with a flood of internet traffic. The goal is to make the target resource unavailable to its intended users.

DoS attacks are launched from a single source, typically a compromised computer. DDoS attacks, on the other hand, originate from multiple compromised systems, often referred to as a botnet, which are controlled by an attacker. This distributed nature makes DDoS attacks more powerful and harder to trace and mitigate.

These attacks can manifest in various ways. Some target the network bandwidth, flooding the target with so much data that legitimate traffic cannot get through. Others exploit vulnerabilities in the target's software or hardware, causing it to crash or become unresponsive. Application-layer attacks specifically target specific applications or services, attempting to exhaust their resources.

The impact of a successful denial-of-service attack can be severe. For businesses, it can lead to significant financial losses due to downtime, lost revenue, and damage to reputation. Critical services, such as those provided by governments or emergency responders, can also be disrupted, posing a threat to public safety.

Defending against DoS and DDoS attacks involves a multi-layered approach. This includes network traffic monitoring, intrusion detection and prevention systems, traffic filtering, and often, working with internet service providers or specialized DDoS mitigation services. Implementing robust security practices and having an incident response plan are crucial for organizations to minimize the impact of such attacks.
