The goal is to enable correct use, safe operation, maintenance, and repair, while reducing user error and support costs. The field serves engineers, technicians, operators, and other non-specialists who must interact with complex systems.

Technical writing emphasizes audience analysis, precise terminology, logical information architecture, and clear instructions. Texts are typically task-focused, use imperative mood for procedures, and include warnings, diagrams, and tables to support understanding. Consistency of terminology and style, as well as accessibility and localization, are core considerations. The practice often involves collaboration with subject matter experts, designers, and software developers, as well as ongoing review and revision.

Deliverables are increasingly produced in modular, reusable formats using markup and content-architecture approaches such as XML-based authoring, DITA or DocBook, to support publishing across print, PDF, and online help. Regulatory and safety requirements, such as product labeling and instructions for use, influence content and structure. In German-speaking contexts the term Techniktexten is closely related to the broader fields of technische Kommunikation and Technisches Schreiben.
