Researchers typically examine how algorithms, data practices, and platform affordances influence communication, labor, and cultural production, as well as how communities organize, resist, or adapt to technological change. Origins and usage of the term are not uniformly standardized; techcultural has emerged in late 2010s and 2020s discourse as an umbrella concept for examining technology and culture together, distinct from but related to digital culture and technology and society studies. Critics caution against vagueness and emphasize the need for critical analyses of power, inequality, and ethics in tech-enabled culture.
