Teadusgrupid

Teadusgrupid refers to a classification system used in Estonia, a country located in Northern Europe. The term is used to categorize higher education institutions based on their research and development capacity. The system was introduced to characterize universities, colleges, and other educational institutions in terms of their potential for contributing to research and innovation.

Under the teadusgrupid system, institutions are grouped into five categories, ranging from II to VI, II being the highest and VI the lowest. Category II includes institutions that have a high research and development capacity, Category III institutions have a moderate capacity, while Category IV institutions have a lower capacity. Categories V and VI represent institutions with a very low or no research capacity.

Institutions assigned to Category II are eligible to offer doctoral degree programs and are usually state-funded. Category III and IV institutions may also offer doctoral programs, but with certain restrictions. Categories V and VI institutions do not have the right to offer doctoral programs and often focus on teaching and training.

The teadusgrupid classification has implications for the funding and operations of institutions within Estonia. Category II and III institutions tend to receive more substantial state funding compared to lower-tier institutions. The system aims to promote research and innovation by providing greater incentives for Category II and III institutions to engage in research activities.
