Tawerets

Taweret is an ancient Egyptian goddess associated with childbirth and fertility. Her name means "She Who Is Before" or "She Who Is Great." She is often depicted as a hippopotamus, a creature known for its maternal fierceness and protective nature, standing upright on her hind legs. Her image typically combines the body of a pregnant hippopotamus with the limbs of a lion, the back of a crocodile, and sometimes the head of a human or a human-like face.

Taweret's primary role was to protect pregnant women and children during childbirth and infancy. She was invoked to ward off evil spirits and dangers that could harm mothers and newborns. Her protective nature was so revered that amulets and charms in her likeness were commonly worn. She was also associated with the god Bes, another protector deity, and they were often depicted together.

While not a major deity in the same pantheon as Ra or Osiris, Taweret held significant importance in the daily lives of ancient Egyptians, particularly for women. Her cult was widespread throughout Egypt, and she was honored in various temples and domestic shrines. Her imagery served as a powerful symbol of protection, motherhood, and the continuation of life.
