Taufbuch

A Taufbuch is a baptismal register used by Christian churches to record baptisms within a parish. In German-speaking areas the term is common for a component of the Kirchenbücher, which are parish records kept by clergy. Taufbücher serve both sacramental and civil purposes, documenting the religious initiation of individuals and providing an official record of births and familial relationships.

Typical contents include the date and place of baptism, the name of the child, the date and place of birth, the names and sometimes occupations of the parents, and the residence of the family. Often the entries note the names of godparents (Paten) and the officiating priest, and may include information on legitimacy or special circumstances. The level of detail and the exact fields vary by denomination, parish, and historical period; some entries also record the baptismal motto or the language of the ceremony.

Historically, Taufbücher developed from early parish registers in the Middle Ages and were maintained by parish priests within the framework of Catholic or Protestant practice. Over time, many regions introduced civil vital records, and in some countries the civil authorities later took over the recording of births, marriages, and deaths (Standesamt). Nevertheless, church baptismal registers remain an important source for genealogical research and for tracing lineage, especially where civil records are incomplete or unavailable.
