Tathgatagarbha

Tathgatagarbha, also known as "Buddha-nature" or "womb of the Tathgata," is a Mahayana Buddhist concept that refers to the innate potential for enlightenment present within all sentient beings. The term combines "Tathgata," meaning "thus gone" or "thus arrived," and "garbha," meaning "womb" or "embryo," symbolizing the inherent Buddhahood embedded within beings.

The doctrine of Tathgatagarbha suggests that every individual contains a pure, luminous core that is obscured by defilements such as ignorance, attachment, and aversion. This intrinsic nature is considered to be fundamentally pure and enlightened, serving as the basis for the possibility of enlightenment and liberation. The concept seeks to reconcile the idea of inherent Buddhahood with the reality of spiritual development, emphasizing that enlightenment is a process of uncovering and realizing this innate nature rather than creating something entirely new.

Critics of the concept have argued that it might imply a form of essentialism or nihilism, but proponents maintain that it emphasizes the potential for awakening present in all beings.
