Tarralla

Tarralla is a genus of freshwater fish belonging to the family Loricariidae, commonly known as armored catfish. These fish are native to South America, primarily found in the Amazon and Paraná river basins. Tarralla species are characterized by their bony plates covering their bodies, which provide protection. They are also distinguished by their suckermouths, which they use to cling to surfaces like rocks and driftwood and to feed on algae and detritus. Their coloration often varies, but many species exhibit mottled or striped patterns that aid in camouflage within their natural habitats. These fish are generally small to medium in size, with most species not exceeding 10 centimeters in length. Tarralla are popular in the aquarium trade due to their algae-eating capabilities and their unique appearance. However, like all Loricariids, they require specific water parameters and a suitable environment to thrive. Their diet in captivity should supplement their natural grazing with sinking foods rich in vegetable matter.
