Taristuerõhk

Taristuerõhk is a concept in civil and energy infrastructure engineering that denotes the effective air pressure within enclosed volumes of an infrastructure system, such as ventilation shafts, cable ducts, water and gas conduits, and building service rooms. It is used to analyze how trapped or moving air contributes to pressure dynamics, venting, and surge loads.

Etymology: The word comes from Estonian taristu (infrastructure) + rõhk (pressure) and õhk (air), reflecting its focus on air pressure related to infrastructure rather than liquid pressure.

Definition and scope: Taristuerõhk refers to the pressure of air within or between network compartments under varying boundary conditions. It is distinct from the pressure of the contained gas or liquid in pipelines and is treated as a boundary or internal state variable in simulations. It is relevant for design of ventilation, surge protection, and leak detection by tracking how air compressibility and volume changes affect overall system behavior.

Measurement and modeling: Practically, taristuerõhk is estimated using sensors that measure absolute or differential air pressure in key sections, and through numerical models that apply the ideal gas law, compressible flow equations, and network analysis. Units are pascals or kilopascals; time-dependent modeling captures transient events such as valve closures, fan switching, or temperature changes.
