Tarbelustest

Tarbelustest, also known as tarbelust, is a term used in the field of entomology to describe the behavior of certain insects, particularly moths, where they exhibit a strong attraction to tar. This phenomenon is often observed in species such as the tarworm moth (Archips argyrospila) and the tar spot moth (Enarmonia formosana). The attraction to tar is believed to be a result of the presence of certain chemicals, such as phenols and cresols, which are found in tar and are also produced by the insects themselves.

The tarbelustest behavior is thought to serve an evolutionary purpose, as it allows the insects to locate suitable habitats for their larvae, which feed on the wood of trees that have been treated with creosote or other tar-based preservatives.
