Tarbais

Tarbais is a breed of domestic chicken originating from the region of Tarbes in the Pyrenees mountains of France. These chickens are known for their distinctive appearance and hardy nature, suited to the often harsh climate of their native area. The breed is characterized by its plumage, which is typically dark, ranging from black to a very dark slate gray, with some individuals exhibiting a metallic sheen. They have a single comb and wattles, which are usually dark red. Tarbais are medium-sized chickens, with roosters weighing around 3.5 kilograms and hens about 2.5 kilograms.

Historically, Tarbais chickens were kept for both meat and eggs. They are considered a dual-purpose breed, though they are not particularly prolific layers. Their eggs are typically light brown. The breed is also noted for its robust constitution and foraging ability, making them well-suited to free-ranging conditions. Due to their origins in a mountainous region, they are known to be resistant to cold and other environmental challenges.

In terms of temperament, Tarbais chickens are generally described as calm and docile. They are not known to be overly flighty and can adapt well to confinement if necessary, though they thrive when allowed to roam. The breed has faced periods of decline in numbers, like many traditional farm breeds, but efforts are underway by enthusiasts and conservationists to preserve its genetic lineage and promote its presence. They are a part of France's agricultural heritage.
