Tandemdrivningar

Tandemdrivningar, often referred to as tandem drives, are a mechanical system where two or more driven axles are placed in close proximity to each other, typically one directly behind the other. This configuration is commonly found in heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks, buses, and specialized construction equipment. The primary purpose of a tandem drive is to distribute the load more evenly across multiple axles, thereby increasing the vehicle's carrying capacity and improving traction, especially in challenging terrain or under heavy loads.

In a tandem drive system, the power from the engine is transmitted to both (or all) driven axles. This can be achieved through various means, including inter-axle differentials that allow the axles to rotate at different speeds, which is crucial when turning. Without such a differential, the wheels on the inner and outer sides of a turn would have to travel different distances at the same rotational speed, leading to tire scrub and excessive wear. The implementation of tandem drives allows for higher gross vehicle weights to be legally transported, as the load is shared, reducing the stress on individual axles and the road surface.

The design and implementation of tandem drives vary depending on the application. Some vehicles feature two driven axles in a tandem configuration (a bogie), while others might have three or more. The types of differentials used, the suspension systems, and the overall driveline layout are all critical factors in the performance and efficiency of tandem driven vehicles. This technology is a cornerstone of heavy transport, enabling the movement of substantial cargo over significant distances and in demanding operational environments.
