Tandabscesser

Tandabscesser is a colloquial term, often used in certain regions, to refer to a dental abscess. A dental abscess is a localized collection of pus in the teeth and gums, typically caused by a bacterial infection. These infections can originate in the tooth pulp (an endodontic abscess) or in the supporting structures of the tooth, such as the gums and bone (a periodontal abscess).

Symptoms of a dental abscess can vary but commonly include a severe, persistent toothache, pain that may radiate to the jawbone or neck, sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, fever, swelling in the cheek or jaw, and a tender or swollen lymph node under the jaw. A foul taste or smell in the mouth, or the presence of a pus-filled bump on the gums (a gum boil or parulis), can also be indicative of an abscess.

Untreated dental abscesses can lead to serious complications, including the spread of infection to other parts of the body, such as the brain, sinuses, or heart. Diagnosis typically involves a dental examination, X-rays, and sometimes a physical examination to check for swelling and tenderness. Treatment usually involves draining the abscess to remove the pus, followed by root canal therapy to treat the infected tooth pulp, or tooth extraction if the tooth cannot be saved. Antibiotics are often prescribed to combat the bacterial infection. Prompt dental care is crucial for managing a dental abscess and preventing its spread.
