Taggregister

Taggregister is a term used to describe a data structure or component in tagging systems that maintains mappings between tags and the resources they label. It functions as a central index within applications that organize content or data by tags, enabling efficient lookups, filtering, and management of tag metadata.

In practice, a taggregister stores associations such as which resources (documents, posts, datasets, etc.) carry which tags, and may also record tag metadata, such as creation date, synonyms, or hierarchical relationships. It supports operations to add and remove tags from resources, create new tags, merge or alias tags, and query resources by one or more tags.

The typical data model uses a many-to-many relationship between tags and resources. A common implementation is a map from tag identifiers to sets of resource identifiers, with secondary indexes to support reverse queries. Features may include tag normalization, deduplication, case-insensitive matching, and access control to enforce who can modify tag associations. Some implementations also track tag provenance, including who applied a tag and when.

Taggregisters are used across content management systems, knowledge bases, data catalogs, and social platforms to enable tag-based discovery, navigation, and analytics. They support features such as tag clouds, facet filtering, and analytics by recording usage patterns and application history.
