Tähtäinristikko

Tähtäinristikko, also known as the "crossbow" or "crossbow bolt" in English, is a traditional Finnish hunting and fishing tool with a long history. The name "tähtäinristikko" literally translates to "sight cross," referring to its cross-shaped sighting mechanism used for accurate aiming. This device was particularly popular among Finnish hunters and fishermen in the 19th and early 20th centuries, especially in rural and forested areas where traditional firearms were less accessible or regulated.

The tähtäinristikko typically consists of a wooden or metal frame with a crosshair sight, a trigger mechanism, and a slot for attaching a rope or line. Hunters would use it to shoot small game or birds with a bolt, while fishermen would employ it to catch fish by launching a weighted line or hook. The design allowed for greater precision compared to a simple bow or spear, making it a valuable tool in subsistence-based economies.

The use of tähtäinristikko declined with the widespread adoption of modern firearms and fishing equipment in the mid-20th century.
