Süllyedések

Süllyedések, a Hungarian term, translates to "sinkings" or "subsidences" in English. It generally refers to the phenomenon of the ground surface lowering or collapsing. This can occur due to a variety of natural and anthropogenic causes.

Natural causes of süllyedések include geological processes such as the dissolution of soluble rocks like limestone or salt, leading to the formation of underground cavities that eventually collapse. Compaction of unconsolidated sediments, especially in areas with high groundwater levels, can also cause gradual subsidence. Seismic activity can trigger localized ground failures and sinkholes.

Human activities are significant contributors to süllyedések. Extensive groundwater extraction for agricultural, industrial, or municipal purposes can lower the water table, causing the soil to compact and the ground surface to sink.
