Säätötekniikoilla, known in English as control engineering or control systems, is a branch of engineering that deals with the behavior of dynamical systems with inputs, and how their behavior is modified by feedback. The primary goal of control engineering is to design systems that maintain a desired state or trajectory despite disturbances or uncertainties. This involves understanding the underlying physical principles of the system to be controlled, modeling its behavior mathematically, and then developing algorithms or strategies to influence its inputs to achieve the desired outputs.

Key concepts in säätötekniikoilla include feedback, where the system's output is measured and used to adjust its input, and stability, ensuring that the system does not exhibit unbounded oscillations or diverge. Different types of controllers are employed, such as proportional (P), proportional-integral (PI), and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers, each offering distinct ways to process the error signal (the difference between the desired and actual output). Advanced techniques involve state-space representation, optimal control, and adaptive control for more complex or changing systems.
