Szuvasodások, commonly known as tooth decay or cavities, are a widespread oral health issue affecting millions worldwide. This process begins when bacteria present in the mouth, primarily Streptococcus mutans, metabolize sugars and starches from the food we consume. This bacterial action produces acids as a byproduct.

These acids attack the hard outer layer of the tooth, the enamel, which is composed mainly of minerals like calcium and phosphate. Initially, the acid demineralizes the enamel, making it weaker and more porous. Over time, if the demineralization process continues unchecked, it can create small holes or cavities in the tooth structure.

Factors that contribute to the development of szuvasodások include a diet high in sugar and acidic foods, poor oral hygiene practices leading to plaque buildup, and insufficient exposure to fluoride, which helps to strengthen enamel. Genetics can also play a role in an individual's susceptibility.

The progression of tooth decay can range from superficial enamel lesions to deep cavities that reach the dentin and even the pulp of the tooth, potentially causing pain, infection, and tooth loss. Early detection and treatment are crucial, often involving dental fillings to restore the tooth's structure and prevent further damage. Regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing, are key to preventing szuvasodások.
