Szilárdtestek, often translated as solids, are one of the fundamental states of matter, alongside liquids, gases, and plasma. In a solid, atoms and molecules are held tightly together in a fixed arrangement, vibrating about their equilibrium positions but not moving past each other. This close packing and strong intermolecular forces are what give solids their characteristic properties: a definite shape and a definite volume.

Solids can be broadly classified into two main categories: crystalline and amorphous. Crystalline solids, such as ice, salt, and metals, have their constituent particles arranged in a highly ordered, repeating three-dimensional pattern called a crystal lattice. This long-range order leads to distinct physical properties like sharp melting points and specific cleavage patterns. Amorphous solids, on the other hand, lack this long-range order. Their particles are arranged more randomly, and they typically soften gradually over a range of temperatures rather than melting sharply. Examples of amorphous solids include glass, rubber, and plastic.

The properties of solids are determined by the nature of the bonds between their particles and the arrangement of those particles. For instance, metals, with their metallic bonds, are generally good conductors of electricity and heat, and are often malleable and ductile. Ionic solids, like table salt, are typically hard and brittle, with high melting points. Covalent network solids, such as diamond, are extremely hard and have very high melting points due to the strong covalent bonds extending throughout the material. Molecular solids, formed by weaker intermolecular forces, tend to have lower melting and boiling points.
