Szenzorineurális refers to a type of hearing loss characterized by damage to the inner ear or the auditory nerve. This contrasts with conductive hearing loss, which affects the outer or middle ear. In the case of sensorineural hearing loss, the sound waves may enter the ear normally, but the brain receives them incorrectly due to issues with the sensory hair cells in the cochlea or the nerve pathways transmitting auditory information.

The causes of sensorineural hearing loss are varied and can include aging (presbycusis), exposure to loud noises, certain medications, genetic factors, and medical conditions such as Meniere's disease or meningitis. It is often a permanent condition, though its severity can range from mild to profound. Symptoms may include difficulty understanding speech, especially in noisy environments, a feeling of fullness in the ear, and tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
