The term derives from the Lithuanian word *sytis*, meaning "to wrestle" or "to fight," and is closely tied to cultural and historical practices in these regions.

The sport has deep historical roots, often linked to pagan rituals and communal celebrations. In Lithuanian folklore, sytysits were part of festivals marking transitions, such as the summer solstice or harvest celebrations. These events were not just athletic contests but also social gatherings where participants, often young men, competed in strength and skill.
