Sytokiinivasteoireyhtymä, or Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS), is a systemic inflammatory response that can occur in patients undergoing certain medical treatments, particularly those involving immunotherapy like CAR T-cell therapy. It is characterized by the rapid and excessive release of cytokines, which are signaling molecules that help regulate the immune system. When this release becomes uncontrolled, it can lead to a cascade of inflammatory reactions throughout the body.

The symptoms of CRS can vary in severity and often resemble those of a severe infection or sepsis. Common manifestations include fever, chills, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, and rapid breathing. In more severe cases, CRS can lead to dangerously low blood pressure (hypotension), fluid accumulation in the lungs (pulmonary edema), organ dysfunction, and even life-threatening complications. The severity of CRS is often graded from mild to severe based on clinical signs and laboratory abnormalities.

The diagnosis of CRS is primarily based on clinical symptoms and the exclusion of other potential causes. There are specific diagnostic criteria that healthcare providers use to identify and classify CRS. Treatment for CRS is tailored to its severity. Mild cases may be managed with supportive care, such as fever-reducing medications and hydration. Moderate to severe CRS often requires more aggressive interventions, including the use of immunosuppressive medications like corticosteroids or tocilizumab, which targets specific cytokines involved in the inflammatory process. Early recognition and prompt management are crucial for improving patient outcomes and preventing severe complications associated with Cytokine Release Syndrome.
