Systemtäckning refers to the extent to which a system, typically a software system, is covered by a set of tests. It is a measure used to quantify the thoroughness of testing efforts, aiming to ensure that all critical parts of the system have been exercised by test cases. High systemtäckning generally implies a greater level of confidence in the system's quality and stability, as more potential errors or defects have likely been identified and addressed.

There are various ways to measure systemtäckning, with code coverage being a prominent example. Code coverage metrics track which lines of code, branches, or statements have been executed by the test suite. Other forms of systemtäckning might consider requirements coverage, ensuring that all specified functionalities are tested, or even architectural coverage, verifying that different components and their interactions are adequately validated.

Achieving 100% systemtäckning can be an ambitious goal, and the optimal level often depends on factors such as the project's criticality, available resources, and risk tolerance. While high coverage is desirable, it does not guarantee the absence of all bugs. The quality and relevance of the tests themselves are crucial; tests that do not effectively probe for defects will not improve systemtäckning in a meaningful way. Therefore, systemtäckning is best viewed as a valuable indicator rather than an absolute guarantee of software quality.
