Systemoperatøren is a role responsible for monitoring, controlling and ensuring the reliable operation of a technical system or network. The primary task is to keep the system operating within defined parameters, respond to alarms, and implement procedures to prevent or mitigate disruptions. The role often involves coordinating with maintenance, engineering and support teams to execute changes and restore normal conditions after incidents.

Typical duties include monitoring real-time status through dashboards and SCADA or similar control systems, interpreting alarms and trends, starting or stopping equipment, adjusting process parameters, and applying contingency procedures during outages. Operators document changes, perform routine tests, conduct handovers between shifts, and participate in incident reviews and continuous improvement efforts. Safety, compliance and information security are integral, with operators following established procedures and reporting any deviations.

Systemoperatører work in a variety of sectors where critical or continuous operation is required. Common contexts include information technology and data centers, industrial automation and manufacturing, electric power grids, telecommunications, rail and other transportation networks, and water or wastewater facilities. Many environments demand around-the-clock coverage, clear communication, and structured incident management.

Qualifications typically include formal education in engineering, information and communications technology, or a related field, combined with on-the-job training in control systems and safety procedures. Relevant certifications may cover operational standards, cybersecurity, and risk management. Strong analytical ability, situational awareness, stress tolerance, and teamwork are valued, as is the ability to follow procedures and document actions precisely.

In Norwegian usage, the term systemoperatøren can be used alongside or interchangeably with driftsoperatør, referring to the person responsible for the day-to-day operation of a system.
